Human Factors in Certification

The course has 6 ‘modules’ of work which are as follows, and in the order listed:
1. Organisational Safety
An introduction to systems thinking, culture and embedded safety as a value in organisations.
Aims - Provide delegates with an understanding of their role within their own organisation and
its influence in creating and sustaining a safe design solution
2. The Human
An introduction to the reality of how humans act and behave.
Aims - Provide delegates with a basic understanding of how humans process information, and in
particular how individuals and teams can initiate catastrophic failure.
3. Meeting the Certification Standard
Knowing the minimum standard
Aims - Provide delegates with an understanding of why certification standards were developed
and what they mean.
4. Meeting the Operational Standard
Going beyond certification into the real world of use and abuse
Aims - Provide delegates with an understanding of the range of real operational situations that
must be considered in developing their designs
5. The Human Centred Design Process
A focus on designing with the intended user at the centre of thinking.
Aims - Provide delegates with a basic understanding of how human centred design processes
should be; the advantages over other approaches and the challenges presented.
6. Rethinking Traditional Safety Engineering
Setting the future Standard
Aims - Provide candidates with an awareness of the potential in progressing today’s causation
theories towards a deeper understanding and use of systems thinking.
